I have a great desire to learn photography. I recently bought a canon slr and want to really learn this thing. what is the best way to go about it ? can anyone point to some good resource ?
Edwin is right. Your owner’s manual is your first and best resource when you’re just starting out. Go through it page by page, not just reading, but doing what it says as you go. That will help you learn your camera, see what it can do and how to do it.
Then branch out. Join a photography club. Take a photography class. Read books and magazines. If you’re using film, learn to develop and print it yourself.
And look at lots of photographs and paintings of the masters. Learn from them. Learn about and look at any art in general for hints on using color, subtle tones and textures in black and white, and composition.
Here’s a good site for learning about exposure. Keep it handy:

For photography class I need to photograph the same person with the same expression in every picture. To create different moods all I can do is change the lighting. What are some different lighting techniques I can use?
Natural light- from a north facing window try rembrandt lighting with this one
Artificial light- on or off camera strobe or studio lights
90 degree side lighting
45 degree side lighting
full frontal lighting
Ideally you should have at least 2 lights to work with and an umbrella.
Use the umbrella to bounce the light or shoot the light straight through the umbrella.
You should have a main light and a fill light. ( your on camera flash can work as the fill)
Try positioning the light and different heights and angles and watch how the shadows change. Start with the main light at a 45 degree angle to your subject and about 2 feet higher thn the camera. And go from there!

I could use some help with creating shadows, while still keeping my colors very vibrant and rich.
The late Monte Zucker was a Master Portrait Photographer. Any of his books on lighting and posing would be excellent references.
Steve Bedell is a Master Photographer who uses available light for his portraiture. You can contact him at http://www.sb@stevebedell.com
He has a free e-newsletter and has several DVDs on lighting.
