Wedding photography business?

February 23rd, 2010 by admin

I would love to start my own business doing wedding photography and offering portrait photography as well. I would love to hear how you started out if you have your own business, i really dont know where to start. I am at the stage where i am looking to buy a professional digital slr camera after coming to the end of my course using a 35mm film camera and i dont have a portfolio at the moment, any advice would be appreciated.

Use this basic checklist to make sure all the important steps are taken before you launch your new venture. This business checklist will make sure that you cross all your t’s and dot all your i’s before your business launch.

One bit of advice from someone who has employed a wedding photographer and who has also worked as an Events Manager, go for informal shots, they look so much nicer, less cheesy and lovely and natural, i was so pleased with mine that I recommended her to all of my clients and she never had to advertise.

The first thing you should probably do is build up your wedding and portrait portfolio. Potential clients are going to want to see samples of your work.

Offer to shoot portraits for friends or coworkers. Try to get a job assisting a local wedding photographer (no shooting, but helping with carrying equipment and generally learning the flow of the day).

I’d also maybe have some established pros critique your work – no sense in pursuing something that you don’t have the talent for.

First, I would advise buying second hand: A lot of photographers are snobs & will upgrade regularly to the newest kit: A four or five year old DSLR makes a good buy, you need to spend on a good photo printer (Epson are the best, no question) or invest in having your shots printed professionally (NOT at Boots). A cheap PC & cheap editing software will easily cope – I build & supply computers for photo & video editing.
Start a portfolio by taking shots for friends & family, friends of friends, etc., ask if you can attend parties & weddings to take some shots: They’ll be glad of a few extra free pictures & it gets you circulating, and you’ll quickly be able to fill a portfolio.
I’ve been in business for over ten years &am still struggling on times, don’t despair!
Don’t spend on advertising, a reputation builds quickly & is priceless.

The very best of success, John

ps My one piece of advice: You can NEVER oversell yourself. If they ask if you can climb Ben Nevis, offer to do Everest.

pps There are many schemes to help new businesses financially & otherwise – take the plunge & let us know how it goes.

I would take a casual job as a wedding photographers assistant or second photographer. You will learn valuable experience before going alone.
