What is the best way to learn professional photography?

February 22nd, 2010 by admin

I would like to learn to become a professional photographer. I have to start from scratch. Thanks in advance.

The first thing to do would be to take a few photography classes. This will get you up and going. Next you will need to decide whether you want to go to a photography school. This is probably the best option. Especially if you are young. You will learn far more in a couple of years than you would praciticing on your own for 5 or 10 years.

Next and you can do this while in school would be to find a local photographer that will bring you on as an assistant. Working with a seasoned pro you will learn how to do the particular kind of photography they do.

Next will be learning the business side of photography. Many talented photographers don’t make it because of poor business skills.

Take a class near you or learn from a friend.

Photography is one of those weird occupations which you do not need any qualifications in which to do well in. Photography is more about the results you get than the qualifications you hold.

I am completely self taught, I hold no degrees or anything, yet I make a side living from selling some of my images. I am not saying that you have to do the same as me, but do not go jumping to the conclusion that you have to study for years at university to become pro, that is simply not true.

Without you being more specific about the type of photography you want to do, I can not give a proper answer. Wedding photography, wildlife, sports, photojournalism, portrait, landscape etc.. all require different skills and different equipment to master. There is no point in me telling you all about strobe lighting if you want to become a landscape photographer.

Be more specific about what you want to do, there are this many fields in photography..

and all require separate tips and advice.
