The late Monte Zucker was a Master Portrait Photographer. Any of his books on lighting and posing would be excellent references.

Steve Bedell is a Master Photographer who uses available light for his portraiture. You can contact him at http://www.sb@stevebedell.com
He has a free e-newsletter and has several DVDs on lighting.
References :
You can definitely create shadows on a models face by using and placing your lights on the side of your model. This typically will light the side closest to the lights you have, and cast a shadow, or even be dark enough to not show any detail on the other side of the face.

Some people like to do the same technique with placing the lights below the face, and even above the head.

Thanks for reading!
References :
Keeping colours vibrant and rich, has all to do with perfect exposure. Lighting and using light modifiers is one of the reasons we use incandescent lighting. It is much easier to see what the light is doing to the subject.

Basic lighting is covered in most photo text books in great detail ... take a look in your library for books with full details and ideas.
References :
Fashion and glamour photographer
